NEWS
FROM THE BOLITHO SCHOOL
David
Dobson, Headmaster
From
the Headmaster's Desk: Spring 2008
This has been another extremely busy term and the school has continued
to enjoy much success. Recruitment is going extremely well and I
am continuing to show many parents and prospective pupils around
the school. They are looking not only for September 2008 but further
ahead for future years. We are certainly reaping the benefits of
our local marketing, as well as the Bursar's marketing in Hong Kong
and China, and my visits to European cities. One very pleasing feature
on the
recruitment front is the increasing number of Year 11 Bolitho students
who are staying on for sixth form education to study the 18 at Clarence
House.
This term we have had an extremely successful Inter-House Music
competition. Sixty-three pupils competed throughout the day and
the trophy was won by Eddystone House. The music department, under
the dedicated leadership of Mrs Blundy, also presented seven soirees
during the last two weeks in January. These provide an opportunity
for all pupils who learn a musical instrument or who have singing
lessons to perform for an audience irrespective of whether they
are at beginner or advanced level.
On the sports field we have also enjoyed a variety of events and
similar successes, and many thanks are due to Mrs Bowden, our Head
of P.E.Hannah Curzon and Katie Robinson have been selected for the
Under 18 South West Girls Rugby Squad, chosen from over 60 players
from Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Gloucestershire who attended
the trial. At the Penwith Primary Schools Cross Country Championships
held in very cold and windy conditions at Cape Cornwall, individual
triumphs were achieved by Geordie Stock in Year 4, Mia Trythall
irt Year 5 and Yola Kingsbury in Year 6. Both Geordie and Mia set
new county records, and the Year 4 boys team currently heads the
inter schools competition. We also had a fantastic result at the
end of last month at the Penwith Secondary Schools Swimming Gala.
Our girls' team won their competition and the boys' team finished
in second place just one point behind St. Ives School.
There have been other notable individual successes in the PE department
since half term. Ellie Starr (Year 10) won the ISA South West Under
16 Girls Cross Country title in Gloucestershire and has qualified
for the national championships. James Waldie (Year 1.1) finished
second in the Boys Championships and has also qualified for the
nationals, and Hannah Curzon, as a result of her performances in
Under 18 County Girls Rugby, has been selected for the Elite Training
Academy at Exeter University run by England coach Nick Creswell.
Last
month we received our OFSTED Report on the Boarding Inspection and
we were very pleased with the outcome. There are 4 judgements in
an Ofsted inspection - Outstanding, Good, Satisfactory, Inadequate.
Our overall quality rating was Good and this was an improvement
on the 2004 inspection where the rating had been Satisfactory. Congratulations
must be offered to Peter Trythall our Head of Boarding, and his
team of Housemasters and Housemistresses. They all work very hard
to ensure high standards in our six boarding houses. We are delighted
with the improvements made since 2004. Our target now must be to
move from Good to Outstanding by the time we next see the Inspectors
during the 2010/2011 academic year. Ofsted have made some recommendations
to secure further improvement in Boarding and these will become
part of the new Five Year School Development Plan.
To
end, I would just like to thank all parents for their support, both
to me personally and to the school. Both our teaching and support
staff continue to work extremely hard to ensure we provide an environment
in which your child can succeed The Bolitho School continues to
go from strength to strength and, so far, we can feel proud of our
achievements during this academic year.
