Bolitho / St Clare Alumni. News from the Chairman. September 2009

The last Saturday in September, for many years now, has been established as the day of our Annual General Meeting and Reunion Lunch. This year was no exception but was particularly memorable. As we were gathering, members of the School Choir had come along to give us a brief performance of some of their repertoire This was a very welcome introduction, much appreciated by all who were there. Next came the Lunch, superb as ever and enhanced by the presence of the new Headmaster, Mr Mark Shere. Although he could not stay for the actual Annual General Meeting, due to a prior appointment, he did speak to all at lunch. His few words were most inspiring and created a wonderful feeling of reassurance for the continuing success of the School and of the Alumni.
The numbers attending 'our day' were indicative of the growing interest in the occasion, boosted in part by the representatives from the 'year of 69'. Well done to them for coming together 40 years on. Add to this the presence of Luke and Josh Barrow paving the way for what we hope will be a more truly comprehensive make-up of the Alumni. After all, for some years now, boys have out-numbered girls on the School register. Luke and Josh may have made history, being the first to brave our Alumni event but we sincerely trust they will not be the last.
This term also saw several of our Alumni members attending the Open Day on Saturday 17th October; this as a result of the warm invitation issued to us by Mr. Shere at our Lunch and being included in the advertisement for the event placed with the local media. It proved to be an extremely successful occasion. The Headmaster, many of his hard working Staff and willing pupils, all of whom had given up their precious time are to be congratulated on the excellent insight into the day-to-day opportunities the School now provides. Those visiting must have marvelled at the facilities and displays witnessed, leaving all profoundly envious of the current students with such a wealth of knowledge, skills and activities available to them.
Finally, the Alumni are planning a spring walk, meeting, initially for lunch at the National Trust Restaurant at Trengwainton. The date is Wednesday 24th March at 12 noon. Later in the year, on Monday 10th May at Country Skittles, Townsend we are holding our annual Skittles evening. The details and reminders will be on our web site nearer the dates. Please come and join us.
Brenda Coxen, Chairman.

The Chapel has been made slightly smaller and given a balcony over the passage way which now runs from the main entrance hall into the school. The Members at the AGM agreed to give two pews to go into the Chapel with our motive engraved on the side.
I am afraid to report that Miss John died on 7 January 2003 just before her 102nd Birthday. These photos was taken on her 100th Birthday when she was presented with a map of Cornwall from the Old Girls Association, and received a card from the Queen.

In the year 2000, The Old Girls planted a tree in the main drive.

This photo shows Angela Treloar (now Mrs Thomas) and Miss Crankshaw at the ceremony.

THE BOLITHO SCHOOL

These photos have come to light of the grounds and we thought you would find them interesting. Before the building was used as a School it was the Riviera Palace Hotel and these are postcards sent from the Riviera Palace Hotel. The first photos shows the steps in front of the building that are still there today but I am afraid most of the grounds are now sold off for building. This was a postcard dated 10 September 1907. We are not sure where the palm trees were situated.
