Bolitho / St Clare Alumni. News from the Chairman. September 2009

Chairman's Report 2011

What a year it has been since I wrote my report for the Newsletter 2010. At the Annual General Meeting on 25 September 2010, the deputy heads, Mr Will Ansell and Miss Ann Miles, represented the GEMS/Bolitho School. No headmaster had yet been appointed by the GEMS organization. Mr Ansell gave us a comprehensive report on the situation within the school, including the prospects for the future and talked of the academic and sporting achievements. Standards had been maintained and often surpassed despite all the difficulties encountered running the school. Miss Miles then answered questions, many of them searching, which gave much reassurance to all present. Guided tours after the AGM were greatly appreciated. Our sincere thanks go to both the hard-working deputy heads along with our congratulations on keeping our school flourishing.
Another welcome guest was the former Anne Beamish, who at 80 had made the journey from her home in Canada, timing her trip to include our lunch and AGM. Her subsequent emails confirmed how much she enjoyed her time with us and the memories her visit had evoked. She mentioned with delight the desserts made by members of the Alumni committee, a comment reiterated many times by those who sampled them. Our thanks are due to those members for their culinary skills. Several of us have had occasional meetings during the year. In January we lunched at Trevaskis Farm restaurant as mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter. March had us meeting at Trevarno for lunch followed by a walk for some, including four legged friends. An evening of skittles at Country Skittles, Townsend in May was a good excuse to work off yet another meal. Lastly Trevaskis in June for another lunch with a surprise attendance by Mary den Bakker (now Zaaijer) over from Holland. She has been a regular attendee at our AGM's but this year came earlier as the last weekend in September will see her celebrating her granddaughter's first birthday. This was her way of giving her apologies!
No doubt if you take advantage of a tour around the school on 24 September, you will notice many changes. At an Open Day during the summer term numerous existing and prospective parents as well as other interested parties, had chance to witness not only the many exhibitions, activities and demonstrations going on but also see the completion of much of the maintenance work. The transforming of the old cottages behind the school into the new sixth form centre plus plans for the new junior department buildings to replace the rundown "temporary" ones, could be classed as work in progress but most impressive.
Finally, the all important post of Headmaster has been filled. Mr Clive Keevil starts his new role in the autumn term. He comes with vast experience, including time spent within the GEMS organization. We look forward to meeting him and his wife Ann. Hopefully they will both be at our lunch and AGM. Do join us then to welcome them to our Alumni.

The Chapel has been made slightly smaller and given a balcony over the passage way which now runs from the main entrance hall into the school. The Members at the AGM agreed to give two pews to go into the Chapel with our motive engraved on the side.
I am afraid to report that Miss John died on 7 January 2003 just before her 102nd Birthday. These photos was taken on her 100th Birthday when she was presented with a map of Cornwall from the Old Girls Association, and received a card from the Queen.

In the year 2000, The Old Girls planted a tree in the main drive.

This photo shows Angela Treloar (now Mrs Thomas) and Miss Crankshaw at the ceremony.
